Dual-Fuel (Hybrid Heat): What is it and how does it work?

A dual-fuel system (also called Hybrid Heat) is a single heating and cooling system that runs on two heat sources instead of one: an electric heat pump outside and a gas furnace inside, sharing the same ducts and thermostat. You control it like any other system. It automatically switches between the two based on the outdoor temperature, running whichever one is cheaper to use at that moment. In summer, the heat pump doubles as your air conditioner.

Across the year, it works in three modes:

Summer: Cooling

The heat pump works like a central air conditioner, pulling heat and humidity out of your home to keep it cool and dry.

Mild Weather: Heat Pump

Between about 35°F and 65°F, the heat pump does all the heating. Moving warmth in from the outside air costs far less than burning gas to make it.

Deep Cold: Gas Furnace

Once it gets cold enough (usually around 30°F to 35°F), the gas furnace turns on for strong, fast heat.

When a Dual-Fuel System Fits Best

  • You have both gas and electric service. A dual-fuel system runs on both, so it needs a gas or propane line plus the electrical capacity for a heat pump.
  • You want to lower your heating bills. A dual-fuel system runs whichever fuel is cheaper each day, so it costs less than burning gas all winter or leaning on a heat pump in deep cold.
  • You want dependable heat in any weather. The gas furnace delivers strong, fast heat for the times a heat pump on its own would struggle to keep up.

When to Consider Other Options

  • You have no gas or propane line. Without a fuel line for the furnace, an all-electric heat pump is the more practical choice.
  • You have no ductwork. A dual-fuel system moves air through ducts, so without them a ductless mini-split system fits better.
  • You want the lowest upfront cost. A dual-fuel system lowers your energy bills over time, but it's two pieces of equipment, so it costs more upfront than a single furnace or heat pump.

Properly Sizing A Dual-Fuel System To Fit My Home

A dual-fuel system only saves money if the two units are sized correctly and built to work together. Two things matter most:

Professional Sizing

A licensed professional runs a Manual J load calculation to size both the heat pump and the furnace to your home. An oversized system cycles on and off too fast and leaves rooms humid, while an undersized one runs constantly and never quite keeps up. The calculation weighs your insulation, windows, and local climate, not just square footage.

Matching the Components

The heat pump, indoor coil, furnace, and blower all have to be compatible. The blower has to move the right amount of air for the heat pump (a variable-speed blower works best), and the whole system runs on a dual-fuel-capable smart thermostat that can switch between the two heat sources. We confirm everything matches before installation.

Efficiency Ratings: SEER2, HSPF2, and AFUE

A dual-fuel system is measured by three efficiency ratings, one for each job it does: cooling and heating from the heat pump, and heating from the gas furnace. Like miles per gallon for a car, a higher rating means a more efficient unit. Just compare like with like: SEER2 to SEER2, not SEER to SEER2.

  • SEER2 (cooling): how efficiently the heat pump cools across a full season, with temperatures ranging from about 65°F to 104°F.
  • HSPF2 (heat pump heating): how efficiently the heat pump heats over a full heating season.
  • AFUE (furnace heating): the share of fuel the gas furnace turns into heat. A 90% AFUE furnace turns 90% of the gas it burns into usable heat.

You may still run across older SEER and HSPF numbers while you shop. That's because the SEER2 and HSPF2 labels reflect stricter test procedures the Department of Energy adopted in 2023 — the equipment didn't get less efficient, the measuring stick just got tougher, which trims every rating down a notch. A heat pump that once carried a 15 SEER label, for example, now reads closer to 14.3 SEER2. When you're weighing two systems, line up the same rating against itself rather than pitting an old number against a new one.

Minimum Standards by Region

The U.S. Department of Energy sets minimum efficiency standards by region, so the lowest rating you can buy depends on where you live:

Why SEER2 and HSPF2 Replaced the Old Ratings

SEER2 and HSPF2 are updated standards from the U.S. Department of Energy. The older SEER and HSPF ratings were measured under very precise lab conditions. The newer tests add higher static pressure to better reflect how a system actually runs in a real home, so the numbers are a more realistic guide to everyday performance.

EER2 vs. SEER2

Both rate an air conditioner's cooling efficiency, but at different temperatures. EER2 measures efficiency at a peak cooling temperature of 95°F, while SEER2 averages efficiency across a full cooling season (65°F to 104°F). EER2 shows how the unit holds up on the hottest days, and SEER2 shows how it performs over the whole season.

How To Maintain An Existing Dual-Fuel System For Optimal Performance and Savings

The equipment balance point is where the heat pump can no longer keep up with your home's heat loss.
